As of July 15, 2022, Brooklyn Public Library is no longer offering its fee-based out-of-state library card. Our priority remains serving Brooklynites and assuring that they can access the materials they need in a timely manner. BPL Library cards remain free for anyone who lives, works, pays property taxes or attends school in New York State. Existing out-of-state accounts will remain active until their expiration date and will not be renewable.
new york state library opening hours
The New York State Library is a research library in Albany, New York, United States. It was established in 1818 to serve the state government of New York and is part of the New York State Education Department. The library is one of the largest in the world by number of items held, with over 20 million cataloged items in 2011.[1]
The library and its sister institutions, the New York State Museum and New York State Archives, are housed in the Cultural Education Center, which is part of the Empire State Plaza, a large complex of state government offices in downtown Albany.
As a New York state employee, you are eligible to access resources from the New York State Library, including BioOne, JSTOR, and PsycInfo. To access these resources, you must first register with the state library to gain remote access. Instructions for applying for access (PDF)
All researchers are welcome to use the resources in the Troy Room. The Troy Room is open duringnormal library operating hours. For those who cannot visit our library in person, we offer remote assistance for a fee of $25. The $25 fee must be paid in advance, and will cover up to one hour of genealogical research. If you are interested in this service, please print out the Genealogy and Local History Request Form, fill it out and mail it along with your check for $25 to: Troy Public Library, Attention: Genealogy and Local History, 100 Second Street, Troy, NY 12180.
The San Jose Public Library provides free online access to the New York Times on Internet computers and library wi-fi at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and at all Branch libraries during our normal operating hours. We also offer 72-hour offsite access through our website.
The Research Library is open by appointment only. Research appointments (in person or Zoom) can be scheduled on the Buffalo History Museum website. In-person appointments are 2 hours long, and social distancing is required (3 researchers are allowed in the library at a time).
"The Friends Place" book store, located off the lobby, is a great place to shop for used and donated books and other material. The book store is scheduled to be open during regular library hours but is staffed entirely by volunteers. If you're available to help out, please consider filling out an application and volunteering your time.
Thanks to federal CARES Act stimulus funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the library fulfilled its goal of providing state-level leadership, planning, coordination, consultation, and support services to advance digital equity and inclusion efforts that improve broadband adoption.
